About

This site is dedicated to sharing and archiving information about Oscar Charleston, the greatest baseball player you’ve never heard of–or that most people have never heard of, anyway.

My name is Jeremy Beer. My biography of Charleston, who like me was born and raised in Indiana, will be published on November 1, 2019, by the University of Nebraska Press. Here is the cover:

And here I am with my trustworthy research assistant:

(I think Bertie and I are looking at clippings from the late ’20s in this photo….)

On this site, I share facts, anecdotes, stories, and statistics about Charleston on as regular a basis as I can manage. I’m also sharing information related to the Charleston bio, any speaking engagements, and all that sort of thing.

In fact, I will be speaking on Charleston and the Negro Leagues in various places in late 2019 and throughout 2020, as we mark the one hundredth anniversary of the creation of the Negro National League. If you would like to contact me about a speaking opportunity or anything else, you may use the form below, or just drop me a line at beerjeremy [at] hotmail.com.

I just finished the Oscar Charleston bio. I enjoyed learning about Oscar’s impact to black baseball and beyond. Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, we did not have the opportunity to hear about great Negro players beyond Paige and Gibson. It is great to see that this bio can be added to all the other enjoyable Negro League books that have been published over the last 25 years.

    Thanks.
